Stene Line breaks ground using 'blue methanol' as a bunker fuel
25 Jun 2021
Quantum Commodity Intelligence - Stena Line has claimed a world first by powering a ferry with 'blue methanol', recycling the gas from the steel industry.
The ferry company converted the Stena Germanica to be able to use methanol or diesel to power the engine in 2015.
This week the ferry travelled from Sweden to Germany powered by recycled residual methanol.
Methanol is much greener than traditional marine fuel, cutting sulfur emissions by 90% and nitrogen emissions by 60%, Stena Line stated.
