French developer to create projects under Puro, Riverse, LBC

Quantum Commodity Intelligence – French developer Carbonapp is working on multiple projects registering under three standards, ranging from newly-established Riverse to Finland-based registry Puro.earth, as well as France's domestic carbon scheme, co-founder Nicolas Ferrière told Quantum.

Ferrière said Riverse, which currently operates four methodologies, has more than 100,000 credits registered.

Carbonapp is working on a new 100,000 tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent project using Riverse's bio-based construction materials protocol, which documents the greenhouse gas emissions avoided by switching to green materials in the construction industry across sites in France and Spain.

The French private standard also operates methodologies in biogas from anaerobic digestion, electronics reconditioning and refurbishing, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage and biochar.

"They have some interesting methodologies that we don't find elsewhere, neither in the Label Bas Carbone (LBC, France's domestic offset market) nor in Puro," said Ferrière.

Last month, Carbonapp listed France's second ever biochar project under Puro.earth, at the Four Bordet facility in the Burgundy region.

Ferrière said the project is located at an existing charcoal plant and is a test case for how to transform an old industry into a new type of sector: carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

"There is a plan to modernise the factory from charcoal to biochar. Today they still have a historical activity on coal and it could migrate to biochar to double CDR volumes," Ferrière also said.

Carbonapp said it earns a large share of its revenues from France's LBC, in particular reforestation activities, which are the most common project type, following the adoption of a bill requiring all domestic flights in France to be offset from 2024 onwards, up from 70% in 2023.

It said it is working with a company called ChrystalChain to create emissions vintages from the five-year supplies generated under LBC.
