Cercarbono launches consultation on 'indicator species' method
Quantum Commodity Intelligence – Colombia-based carbon standard Cercarbono has launched a public consultation on a new methodology on the use of indicator species to assess biodiversity conservation.
The methodology, "For the Conservation of Intact Regional Biodiversity through the Use of Indicator Species", produced by project developer Savimbo, "will be a crucial component of the biodiversity program currently under development by Cercarbono", the company said.
"The essence of the methodology lies in the use of indicator species, a simple yet powerful concept demonstrated by the fact that certain flora and fauna species can only thrive in properly functioning ecosystems," Cercarbono said.
A healthy specimen in its natural habitat is a scientifically valid indicator of ecosystem integrity, it added.
"Confirming the presence of these species through non-invasive monitoring techniques, such as trail cameras, photographs, or audio recordings, respects wildlife and can be easily and immediately implemented on the ground by local community groups in traditional hunting and gathering contexts," Cercarbono said.
The methodology is available for public consultation on Cercarbono's website from December 26 until January 25, 2024.
