IAG breaks ground with sustainable aviation fuel in air cargo business
Quantum Commodity Intelligence - Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) was used to fly cargo for International Airlines Group (IAG) last week for the first time, the carrier announced Tuesday.
Planeses carrying cargo made 16 flights with SAF over the week, with the last plane flying from Stuttgart in Germany to Heathrow in the UK and then onto Atlanta in the US.
IAG, which has committed to powering 10% of its fleet with SAF by 2030, bought 1.2 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel from Neste, which it blended with jet fuel, for the flights.
To achieve carbon neutrality, IAG replaced each litre of jet fuel with 1.25 litres of SAF because the environmentally friendly fuel still produces some carbon emissions.
By the end of 2023, Neste plans to produce 1.5 million mt of SAF a year.
