US plane passengers above 1.6 million for first time in a year

3 May 2021

London, (Quantum Commodity Intelligence) - The number of passengers going through border checkpoints at US airports was above 1.6 million for the first time since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, data from the US Department for Transport showed.

A total of 1.627 million passengers took off from US airports on Sunday 2 May, up 4% from the previous Sunday and the highest figure since 12 March 2020.

Sundays are typically the most active day of the week at US airports, while Tuesdays are the least busy day.

The US vaccination campaign is well ahead of other countries, which has enabled an increase in mobility and air traffic levels in recent weeks.

Air traffic remained down around 40% from 2019 levels, but this was up from a drop of around 60% at the start of the year, just before President Joe Biden took office.
