UAE starts commercial operations at first nuclear power plant
London, UK (Quantum Commodity Intelligence) – The UAE announced Tuesday that the Barakah nuclear energy plant has commenced operations, the first nuclear plant in the Arab world and part of the UAE's efforts to diversify its energy mix.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, posting on Twitter said, "The start of commercial operations at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is a historic milestone for the UAE that significantly enhances the sustainability of our entire power sector."
When fully operational, the Barakah plant will have four reactors with a total capacity of 5,600 megawatts.
The plant is located in the Al Dhafrah region of Abu Dhabi and will reduce the country's reliance on natural gas to meet power generation demand.
