Toll road data indicates June recovery for Spain, Italy, France driving

Quantum Commodity Intelligence – Data for toll motorway usage in Italy, Spain and France for June indicated that driving activity is moving closer to business as usual as the countries ease pandemic restrictions, with activity on global toll operator Atlantia's roads improved by 2 to 3 percentage points on the month.

The data released this week showed activity on the company's 3,256 km of roads in Italy averaged 9.2% below the 2019 level in June, up from 12.3% below in May.

Usage of the company's 1,100 km in Spain averaged 8.2% below, up from 11.3% under, while France's 1,768 km averaged 12.6% below, up from 14.7% below.

The data also showed usage in Italy and Spain rising week-on-week for the week ending June 27, although French usage fell.

Italy and Spain moved to month highs of 7.3% and 6.4% below 2019 respectively, while France dropped to a three-week low of 13.6% below.

Brazil data indicated a rebound in activity after a sharp fall the prior week, which saw usage of Atlantia toll roads turn negative for the first time in eight weeks.

Usage of the company's 4,321 km of roads in Brazil bounced back to 2.9% below 2019 levels, from 10.7% the previous week, taking the June average to just 1% below.

Meanwhile, Mexico continued to post healthy figures at 4.3% above 2019 for the final week of June, leaving the month average at 3.7% above, down slightly from 4.3% in May.
