12 Jul 2021

Quantum Commodity Intelligence – Thailand's fuel consumption took a hit in May as a third wave of Covid took hold across the country, with total domestic deliveries falling 6.3% from April to 804,000 barrels per day (bpd), according to official data released Monday.

Gasoline demand dropped 12.8% on the month to 164,000 bpd, while gasoil fell 7.3% to 383,000 bpd.

This left deliveries of the two products down 17.2% and 11.8% respectively from May 2019 figures.

Meanwhile, consumption of jet fuel plummeted 27.8% from April to 26,000 bpd, some way off the 110,000 bpd used in May 2019.

Fuel oil and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) saw demand tick higher though.

Deliveries of fuel oil gained 3% on the month to 34,000 bpd and LPG 4.3% to 196,000 bpd.

This meant fuel oil consumption was flat to the pre-pandemic level, while LPG was still down 5.8%.

Thailand's third wave of Covid cases began in April this year and surged through May and June before hitting a record for the country of 7,000 cases and 75 deaths last week, leaving plans to begin reopening this month in doubt.
